John Shreve MAUD '92
As a Senior Principal at Populous, John has been a practitioner of architecture, planning, and urban design for over 25 years, working with a wide range of clients in various U.S. and international cities. His early career included neighborhood-based design with a community development corporation, and expanded into more complex retail and mixed-use developments as a senior designer at RTKL, before leading larger urban design projects driven by sports/entertainment anchors with Populous.
Based in Kansas City and Tokyo, his projects have garnered numerous professional awards and, more importantly, have acted as catalysts for generating spinoff redevelopment activity with even greater positive community impacts. More recently, he has been working on a number of projects in Asia, developing strategies for the restoration and redevelopment of environmentally disturbed sites, as well ongoing architecture and planning work for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and other urban mixed-use projects.
He has spent much of his career bridging the professional-academic worlds with his ongoing teaching and research at various universities, including the University of Kansas (KU) where he completed his Ph.D. dissertation on urban design issues of health & wellness, transformation & resiliency, and natural & human systems. His emerging academic research and professional network continue to grow directly out of KU’s New Cities research studio, which he co-founded in 2010, focusing on aging and the natural/built environment.
