James O'Hara MArch '73

Since leaving the shelter of Gund Hall in the early ’70′s I have balanced my career between the consulting side of architecture, with large architectural firms and as an independent practitioner; and on the client side for several large corporations.

My recent consulting practice has been split between small-scale local projects and large-scale project planning, master planning for campus facilities, design and construction team assembly, design advisory services and corporate real estate for projects in the U.S. and abroad.

From 2009 through 2012, I provided project management consulting services to Perkins+Will and their parent, Dar Al Handasah as Program Manager for the construction of the King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences with sites in Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Hasa and Madinah.

Prior to re-establishing my consulting practice in 2008, I spent eleven years as Manager, Design and Construction Consulting Services, for Microsoft Corporation’s Real Estate and Facilities Department directing real estate projects for Microsoft subsidiaries in Australia, Asia, Africa, Canada, Europe and South America.

Before joining Microsoft, I spent twelve years as Director of Architecture and Director of Facility Management Consulting Services for Prudential Insurance Company’s Corporate Real Estate Department.

Prior to my arrival at the GSD, I received my BArch from the Catholic University of America. I am registered in Massachusetts and Florida and hold NCARB certification.

I have worked on projects in over 35 countries and have traveled to more than 80 countries. While I have worked extensively in the U.S., my passion and preference is for international work.

My wife of 44 years is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who works with women and children with HIV and AIDS. She has worked in more than 15 countries and until recently managed a Pediatric HIV clinic in Miami, Florida. We have three grown children and four grandchildren.
